Big cubes

4x4x4 Rubik's Revenge

 cube44

Notation: The notation is the same except there are more layers . All of the notation on the 3x3x3 cube applies to the 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 cube. Those moves indicate that you turn the single face slice. A lower case letter like l' indicates you only turn the inner slice of that face. Since a 4x4x4 has an outer left layer and a inner left layer, you only turn the inner one anti clockwise. This applies to every other layers like this. It is not hard to understand.

Requirements:

  • You need to know how to solve a normal 3x3x3 Rubik's cube. If you do not, be sure to check out my guide

  • There are 2 types of cubes: East sheen 4x4x4 cube and Rubik's 4x4x4 cube

Eastsheen- These cubes are the same size as a Rubik's 3x3x3. Well, a centimeter difference. They move better than Rubiks out of the box. They lock up more than Rubiks though. You can get an East sheen on eBay.    They usually ship from China , so be prepared to wait around a month for it!!!

Rubiks- These are made from the Rubik's factory. They are pretty good. Good movement when lubed, but out of the box they are horrrible. So break them in by solving them and then 2-3 days later lube them. They are heavy and big so you need big hand to manipulate them quickly. I use a Rubiks in the video below

Okay before I go into detail about each and every step,  I want to point out the differences between a regular cube(3x3x3) and the Rubiks Revenge (4X4X4):

  • Centers: Unlike the 3x3x3 the centers are not fixed. They are interchangeable.

  • Edges: Now we have 8 edges on each face instead of 4

4X4X4 Rubik's revenge Step 1 : Solve the centers

4X4X4 Rubik's revenge Step 2: Pair up the matching edges

4X4X4 Rubik's Revenge Step 3: Solve like a 3x3x3 with some minor exceptions.

Here is the video tutorial for the 4x4x4:
